First Lady Lori Shapiro Visits Jeremiah’s Place

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – Jeremiah’s Place welcomed Pennsylvania’s First Lady, Lori Shapiro, to its main center in Larimer on July 20 for a site visit highlighting the organization’s work as the region’s only crisis nursery. Shapiro was joined by Pennsylvania’s Secretary of Health, Dr. Debra Bogen.

The visit included a tour of the center, conversations with staff and organizational leadership, and story time with children in care, where Shapiro read a favorite children’s book before lunch. The visit provided an opportunity to learn more about Jeremiah’s Place’s programs supporting families throughout Pittsburgh and the surrounding region, discuss the growing need for emergency childcare, and highlight the importance of investment in family support services.

“As parents of four wonderful children, Josh and I know how important access to high-quality child care is for Pennsylvania families,” said First Lady Lori Shapiro. “It was a pleasure to join Dr. Bogen and the team at Jeremiah’s Place to learn more about the critical role they play in supporting kids and families. Increased access to child care is essential for Pennsylvania workers and families — that’s why Josh and I have made this a top priority.”

Organizational leadership also shared updates on Jeremiah’s Place’s expansion, including the renovation of its future, larger main site in Wilkinsburg and the recent opening of Jeremiah’s Place–Hilltop, the organization’s first satellite location. Together, these expansions will significantly increase Jeremiah’s Place’s capacity to serve more families in crisis.
