Traffic Alert: I-376 Parkway East Closures

Dear JP Families, 

Please see below for an important traffic alert regarding a major construction project that will heavily impact commutes to Jeremiah’s Place this July. 

Starting Friday, July 10 at 9:00 PM through Monday, August 3, I-376 (Parkway East) will be fully closed in both directions between the Squirrel Hill Tunnel and the Edgewood/Swissvale interchange (Exit 77) for 25 consecutive days. 

Crews are using Accelerated Bridge Construction to slide a new, pre-built 22-million-pound Commercial Street Bridge into place. Because roughly 100,000 daily vehicles will be diverted onto local roads, we expect severe gridlock throughout the East End, including Swissvale, Regent Square, Squirrel Hill, and Wilkinsburg. 

Main Detour Details

• Eastbound Traffic: Must exit early at Forbes Ave/Oakland (Exit 72A). ● Westbound Traffic: Must exit early at Wilkinsburg (Exit 78B). 
• Local Bottlenecks: Major local roads like Forbes Avenue and Fifth Avenue will handle the brunt of the diverted traffic and will experience heavy delays. 

Commuting Tips for JP Families

1. 1. Leave Early: Expect unpredictable, daily traffic spikes. Please factor an extra 30 to 45 minutes into your morning and evening travel times to ensure you arrive at TIP safely and on time. 
   2. Consider Public Transit: Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT) is adding temporary Park & Ride locations to encourage transit use. PRT is also pausing its Oakland University Line construction during this window to help keep bus lanes clear. 
   3. Check Live Traffic: Before you leave the house, check real-time road conditions using the 511PA Website or the 511PA mobile app to find the clearest route.
