Jeremiah’s Place Begins Renovating Expanded Wilkinsburg Headquarters to Serve More Children in Crisis

Expanded Wilkinsburg facility marks a new chapter in Jeremiah’s Place’s decade-long commitment to Pittsburgh’s most vulnerable families.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MAY 18, 2026, PITTSBURGH, PA — Jeremiah’s Place announced the launch of renovations at its future expanded headquarters in Wilkinsburg. The organization is a free, confidential, 24-hour crisis nursery offering safe, judgment-free care for children from birth through age 6. The new dedicated facility — located at 467 S. Trenton Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15221 — will double the organization’s footprint and significantly increase its capacity to support families in crisis.

The need is urgent. Since 2014, Jeremiah’s Place has operated out of a shared facility, and today the organization is at full capacity on most days — turning away as many as 45 children per month. The new headquarters will transform how the organization supports children and families by providing a dedicated space intentionally designed for emergency childcare, overnight stays, nutritious meals, play, and developmentally appropriate experiences. With this expanded capacity, Jeremiah’s Place projects that it will reduce its waitlist by at least 70% within two years of opening.

“This expansion reflects both the growing demand for our services and our unwavering commitment to showing up for families in crisis,” said Tammy Aupperle, Executive Director of Jeremiah’s Place. “Having a permanent, purpose-built home will allow us to serve more children, support more families, and provide an even stronger foundation of care for our community.”

The new Wilkinsburg location has been designed with children’s well-being at the forefront. The building supports operational enhancements with a dedicated indoor gross motor space, an outdoor playground and classroom, and dedicated dining and craft areas. An outdoor garden will provide interactive learning on nature and sustainability. A key addition is a sensory room that will provide a calming, supportive environment for children with sensory processing needs, enabling them to explore, regulate, and learn in ways that best support their development.

The expanded facility will also provide greater space for Jeremiah’s Place’s growing suite of family support programs, including:

  • The JereCare Free Closet and Strong Moms Store provide essential items, including toiletries, toys, and clothing, to community members in need.
  • The Strong Families Team connects families with essential resources and referrals to partner agencies.
  • The JereCare Family Program offers parent and caregiver support groups, family dinners, and an annual family resource fair.
  • A book vending machine in partnership with the Allegheny County Library Association provides free board books and picture books to children who visit.
  • The Digital Connectivity Program provides community members with free access to on-site laptops to support employment, education, and healthcare needs.

Renovations are underway now. Supporters, community partners, and media are encouraged to follow Jeremiah’s Place for updates on the facility’s progress and opening timeline.
